The Classic Old Fashioned

A timeless favourite, the Old Fashioned is the gold standard of whiskey cocktails—simple, elegant, and packed with character.

A Brief History of the Old Fashioned

The Old Fashioned is one of the oldest known cocktails, dating back to the early 1800s. It originated in the gentlemen’s clubs of Louisville, Kentucky, where whiskey lovers wanted a drink that was spirit-forward, with just enough sugar and bitters to enhance the whiskey’s depth.

Originally called a Whiskey Cocktail, bartenders started adding all sorts of ingredients in the late 19th century, which annoyed purists who demanded the “old-fashioned way” of making it—hence the name we use today.

Classic Old Fashioned Recipe

Ingredients:

  • 60ml (2 oz) Bourbon or Rye Whiskey
  • 1 Sugar Cube (or ½ tsp simple syrup)
  • 2-3 Dashes Angostura Bitters
  • A Few Dashes of Water
  • Large Ice Cube
  • Orange Peel (for garnish)
  • Luxardo Cherry (optional)

How to Make It:

  1. Place the sugar cube in a lowball (Old Fashioned) glass and soak it with the bitters. Add a splash of water and muddle until dissolved.
  2. Fill the glass with a large ice cube (or several smaller ones).
  3. Pour the whiskey over the ice and gently stir for 20-30 seconds.
  4. Express the orange peel over the drink, run it along the rim, and drop it in.
  5. Optional: Add a Luxardo cherry for a touch of sweetness.
